How to Teach Your Kids to Dress Themselves
By Honeydew USA • 0 comments • 2 minute read
If you are still buttoning up their shirts and lacing up their tiny shoes, it can be hard to believe that your little one may soon start dressing themselves. In fact, at some point, it is important for them to learn how to get dressed. It will not only teach them to be more self-sufficient but also make them independent and confident in their own abilities. And as parents, it is your responsibility to set the stage. So, how do you do that?
Here are a few ways in which you can teach your kid to master the art of dressing for success:
Get dressed along with them
Start with elastic bottoms
Familiarize them with the orientation of the clothing items
When it comes to teaching your kids something, there is nothing like modeling the desired behavior at home. And in this case, you should get dressed with them so that they can imitate you and dress themselves. For instance, if you want them to learn how to button up a shirt, both of you can put a shirt on and do it together, side by side.
Elastic bottoms are the easiest to put on and take on, which makes them a great place to start. You should buy pants, skirts, and shorts that have an elastic waist and do not need any additional accessories like belts or buttons to remain in place. Only once they learn to pull their bottoms up and down should you move on to items with other types of fasteners.
While it may seem like a fairly easy task, identifying the front and back of a dress or t-shirt is not easy for kids. A few ways to teach them the orientation is to show them the tell-tale signs like the labels, which are meant to be on the back of the neck. In case of pants, you can tell them that the zipper or the side pockets should be in the front.
